What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic body-contouring procedure that uses suction to remove unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. Liposuction can address fat deposits in various regions, with the most commonly treated areas including the abdomen, hips, thighs, upper arms, buttocks, and neck. Each patient has unique features, needs, and desires, and liposuction can be used to remove fat from areas of concern to achieve improved body contours.
The procedure involves making a tiny incision in an inconspicuous location and inserting a small tube (cannula) to break up and suction out the fat. Liposuction removes fat but is not intended for weight loss or for treating cellulite. Traditional liposuction uses suction to remove fat, while newer techniques, such as ultrasound-assisted liposuction, employ ultrasound energy to liquefy fat before removal. Suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL) is a common method where the cannula is moved back and forth to break up fat before suctioning it out. Liposuction typically takes roughly 2–4 hours and can sometimes be performed under local anesthesia.
Liposuction is especially effective at removing fat that cannot be eliminated through diet and exercise alone. With personalized treatment, liposuction sculpts the body to enhance definition, create smoother, more even-toned contours, and achieve a slimmer figure.
Liposuction is not a replacement for weight loss. It is used to assist in completing the weight-loss journey by removing stubborn fat that cannot be lost through diet and exercise.
