Introduction to Circumferential Tummy Tuck/ Lower Body Lift

Significant weight loss often comes with significant excess, sagging skin that is not lost in the process. This can lead to internal and external dissatisfaction, including an unwanted aesthetic appearance, difficulty fitting into clothing and swimsuits, and low self-esteem and confidence. Post-pregnancy can also lead to sagging skin and weak abdominal muscles due to prolonged stretching. These concerns can all be addressed with a circumferential tummy tuck or lower body lift at The Plastic Surgery Institute of New Jersey.

We proudly serve patients in Parsippany, New Jersey, and the surrounding counties of Morris, Essex, Union, and Somerset.

What is a Circumferential Tummy Tuck?

A circumferential tummy tuck is an extensive surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat around the entire waistline, lifts the buttocks, and tightens the abdomen. It also trims sagging skin on the flanks (or “love handles”), hips, and thighs to achieve a comprehensive, cohesive appearance. The extended approach avoids leaving leftover skin that can sometimes remain after a tummy tuck.

This tummy tuck technique involves a 360-degree incision, allowing Dr. Shafqat to access the front, sides, back, and abdomen of the patient.

What is a Lower Body Lift?

A lower body lift, also known as a belt lipectomy, produces a smoother, more toned appearance along the belt or waistline by removing excess sagging skin from the lower abdomen, hips, and buttocks. It results in a firmer, more youthful appearance in the lower body with a flatter, more defined abdomen and buttocks. It can help individuals who have lost substantial weight or recently had a child and want to address sagging skin.

How to Begin Your Circumferential Tummy Tuck/ Lower Body Lift Journey

Your lower body lift journey starts with a scheduled consultation at The Plastic Surgery Institute of New Jersey. Here, you will meet our Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Shafqat. He will listen to your concerns, aesthetic goals, and experience with your excess skin. Together, you will:

  1. Review your medical history
  2. Have an in-depth conversation about the procedure and what it can do for you.
  3. Engage in a comprehensive physical evaluation
  4. Discuss additional procedures you can combine

You are more than welcome to ask any questions that come up. Dr. Shafqat will always be transparent and let you know if there are other procedures that would be better for you.

By the end of the consultation, if you and Dr. Shafqat agree that a lower body lift is a good fit, you will work together to create a surgical plan outlining the areas to be treated, any additional procedures, pre- and post-operative instructions, risks, and more.

What to Expect on the Day of Circumferential Tummy Tuck/ Lower Body Lift Surgery

On the day of your circumferential tummy tuck, you will arrive at the hospital or ambulatory surgery center. You will check in with our welcome staff and sign consent forms before heading to an operating room.

Dr. Shafqat will go over the procedure with you again and make a strategic surgical marking for the incision, which will go 360 degrees around your lower abdomen. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so you will be in a deep state of relaxation and won’t have any memory of it.

Dr. Shafqat will begin the surgical procedure by making the incision along the marked line, so he can access your abdomen, back, sides, and butt, removing excess skin and tightening the areas. He will gently flip you over with the help of his surgical team so that he can access the entire circumference of your abdomen. He will complete the surgery by placing drains and a compression garment to minimize swelling.

While some patients can go home the same day, most may need to stay for 1 night to ensure they can walk and recover at home safely with the help of a friend or family member.

Combining My Circumferential Tummy Tuck/ Lower Body Lift with Other Procedures

Combining procedures is an effective way to reduce costs, consolidate recovery periods into one, and achieve comprehensive results. Below are some procedures our New Jersey patients frequently combine with their circumferential tummy tuck:

Fat Transfer to the Buttocks

Fat transfer to the buttocks is a popular addition to a circumferential tummy tuck or lower body lift because it helps restore shape and enhance lower-body proportions. Fat removed from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, or lower back can be purified and strategically transferred to the buttocks to create a fuller, more sculpted contour. When combined with a lower body lift, fat transfer helps enhance the transition between the waist, hips, and buttocks, resulting in smoother, more balanced body contours.

Liposuction

Liposuction is often used to remove stubborn fat that was not lost during weight loss or after pregnancy. Liposuction can be used in specific areas to create a smoother, more even skin texture and tone.

Circumferential Tummy Tuck/Lower Body Lift Recovery

The recovery from a circumferential tummy tuck will take a lot of patience. It typically lasts several weeks in the initial recovery stage and several months to reach the final stages of healing.

At The Plastic Surgery Institute of New Jersey, we are here to support you the entire time. Dr. Shafqat will provide detailed recovery instructions to help you recover smoothly, including taking prescribed medications to minimize pain, gradually returning to exercise and lifting heavy objects over several weeks, and taking plenty of rest.

You’ll experience some swelling, bruising, pain, and tightness for the first few days to a week. Take the pain medication as directed.

It’s very important to attend the scheduled follow-up appointments on time so your wrappings and surgical garments can be removed and Dr. Shafqat can check your progress and healing.
